DEI Includes Disabilities! How to Attract, Develop, and Retain Employees With DisabilitiesDEI is often viewed through the lens of race and gender, and it skips past those with both visible and invisible disabilities. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2021, 19.1% of persons with disabilities were employed vs. 63.7% for persons without a disability. This suggests PWDs might not be sought or considered equitably during the hiring process or as they enter new organizations. MDI Credit Unions: Putting Equity into Practice
Minority depository institution (MDI) credit unions have a long history of providing financial services in communities left underserved by traditional financial institutions. MDIs serve majority Black, Latinx, Asian American, and Native American communities. Research shows that underserved households are more likely to rely on alternative financial services, such as check cashing and payday loans. The use of mainstream financial institutions by these households is often hindered by the minimum amount required to open a traditional checking or savings account and the lack of trust in financial institutions.
Hear from Financial Health Network, Filene Research Institute, and credit union leaders on the challenges and opportunities facing MDI credit unions and what your institution can do to support their growth in today’s environment.
